Business representatives will gather to progress action in reducing land-based sources of pollution to the ocean at World Water Week, the premier global water event (Stockholm, 27-31 August).

The World Ocean Council (WOC) and the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) are collaborating to organize the session on “Source to Sea Solutions: Business leadership in protecting the marine environment from land-based pollution”.

This session will bring together senior corporate representatives from agribusiness, fertilizers, freshwater, plastics, mining, waste management, retail and investment.

Leadership companies will have the opportunity to highlight company and sector action in addressing land-based sources of marine pollution. Companies interested in participating are invited to contact the WOC.

Land-based activities affect marine and coastal ecosystems, compromise ocean health and have implications for other aspects of sustainable development. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14.1 proposes that “By 2025, prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution”.

The business community is undertaking action through company, partnership and multi-stakeholder initiatives to address land-based activities affecting the ocean. This includes engaging in communications and outreach to raise awareness for best management and responsible industry practices (e.g. reduce, remove, reuse, recycle, and optimize), to increase interregional public-private knowledge sharing and cross-sectoral projects and foster scientific collaborations.

Cross-sectoral leadership and collaboration are needed to ensure that efforts by individual companies and sectors achieve the synergies and scale necessary to address these challenges for the ocean overall.

To facilitate this level of action, the WOC/SIWI “Source to Sea” session at World Water Week will:
• Provide examples of industry efforts to address land-based sources of pollution.
• Offer industry perspectives on the road ahead for successful SDG 14.1 implementation.
• Discuss the “roadmap" for delivering on SDG 14 and the actions and partnerships needed to reach the SDG 14.1 target regarding land-based sources of pollution.
• Identify and discuss the barriers and constraints to achieving the SDG 14.1 target and what can be done to overcome them.
